The Eighth and Final Square

with courage face the thing you fear so the pawn becomes the queen

So lately I’ve been thinking of changing my name, and a new year is a good time to make a big change, right? I like the idea of choosing a name that fits you, because let’s face it…honestly, the name you were given doesn’t always fit YOU, the real YOU.

I never liked my middle name anyway…it’s really boring. What I want to do is make Anne my middle name, and change my first name to Phoenix. I can still go by Anne, which would then be my middle name.

Why Phoenix? Well, Phoenix is first of all a really awesome name!! We had even picked it out in case we had a boy, we were going to name him Phoenix Oriole (because Oriole is another really awesome name). The reason why I love the name Phoenix though is because of the symbolism of rebirth. Phoenixes die in a burst of fire, then are reborn from their own ashes and grow strong and beautiful again.

I have been through a lot and in some ways feel like parts of me have died. But I’ve come through and am stronger than ever. I feel like changing my name is another symbol of my new life.

I love that. I wholeheartedly support you, especially as I’m doing the same thing, myself. I love your reasoning behind “Phoenix.” It’s actually one of the reasons that I want one as a tattoo.

Do it, Phoenix. Do it. You have nothing to lose, and your life on your own terms and by your own name to gain.

I’m put in mind of the logo of the city of Atlanta, with a phoenix rising from its ashes and the motto Resurgens. Resurgens is the Latin word both for rebirth and recovery, and a better symbol and term for what we abuse survivors have to go through every day I know not of. Except possibly a promoted pawn….

(Oh, and as an aside, beautiful name for the blog. Cruxshadows songs have kept me going through a lot of the pain as well, especially Quicksilver, Eighth Square, Birthday, and Sophia.)

      That would be so cool!!

I’m glad you like the name! I, for one, love it.

I don’t know how it goes in Oklahoma, but in Oregon, all you need to do is go to the Department of Vital Records, fill out the paperwork, and pay the thirty dollar fee. That said, I’ve heard it said that Oregon makes this a lot easier than most states, so perhaps a trip up here to do it might be in order….
